English Abstract

In this thesis a general investigation is made to study the effect of dynamical and structural parameters on residual stresses relief by vibration technique of cantilevers and plates at different boundary conditions.

In this work the theory of bending of thin plates was used to obtain the governing differential equation of motion.

The strain energy stored in a plate element due to bending, twisting and the mid-plane forces was derived.

A general frequency equation with and without including the effect of residual stresses for an elastically restrained flat plate is obtained.

The plate has clamped-simply supported-simply supported-free conditions.

A finite element model is developed to predict the amount of stresses relieved by vibration on beam and plate structures.

These stresses were induced in the structures by applying tensile loads in an early stage.

The analysis studied the effect of treatment time, magnitude of excitation force and the frequency of excitation on the amount of the residual stresses by vibration.

The results produced from the present research showed that vibratory stress relief (VSR) technique is a powerful method in relieving stresses from structural parts.

The larger the amplitude of excitation the greater the amount of stress relieved by vibration.

It is also shown that a great benefit is gained from (VSR) when the direction of vibrational force is compatible with that of the type of motion of structures.
