English Abstract

Al Hawizeh marsh has been taken as a case study in this research which is considered the most important marsh in south of Iraq.

This research focuses on "the development of a hydrodynamic model that can simulate unique characteristics of the marsh and calculate velocity gradients in two dimension, water depths, and water surface elevations.

These calculations will help for rehabilitation of a functioning marsh by using it to build up a water quality model as a further study.

A hydrodynamic model for Al Hawizeh marsh is built by using RMA2 model.

The model is a part of Surface Water Modeling System (SMS) software package.

Run scenarios are based on date of field measurements, the measurements are collected within two weeks as time interval, starting on 15 March 006 to 15 June 006, which included hydrologic measurements.

This research is an attempt to collect bathymetric information in the field and create contour map by using these information in corporation with some of software packages.

Area-elevation and storage-elevation curves were extracted from the topographic information, where the maximum water surface area of the marsh is 852.03 km2 at present time.

The model was verified using two gauge stations placed properly in the marsh.

The model showed good agreement in its results compared with field data.
