English Abstract

This thesis describes the development of an expert system for flow instruments selection and specifications.

Implementation of this advisory system is accomplished through the artificial intelligence logic programming language Turbo Prolog.

The proposed system consists of the inference engine coupled to a knowledge base dealing with flow meter selection procedure.

The complexity and sequential nature of the selection procedure requires the factoring of the solution into sub-problems, each of which is solved as required.

The system represents each sub-problem as a collection of frames and production rules, which describe to the engine the layout of knowledge and feasible solution path, which must be followed in order to reach the correct solution.

The proposed expert system should assist the design engineer (or instrumentation engineer) in speeding-up the selection procedure of flowerets and guide the inexperienced designer to produce the required design documents for instruments, The practical applications of this expert system to different sets of operating conditions, gave tangible evidence of the study cases applying technical criteria of the Instrument Society of America ISA standard.

For any given case, the experimental results of the expert system show that tie engine used fitted the technical criteria of the ISA standard in practice.
