English Abstract

Glass fibre reinforced concrete is considered as a new building material, Which has different properties than those of ordinary concrete.

Glass fibre reinforced concrete is used for one or more of the following reasons: -Structural such as (loading, fire, and earthquake) ; Handling such as (to withstand stocking, transport and erection stress) ; and Shrinkage (to with stand differential stresses).Glass Fibre / vere found to.

improve significantly the tensile strength , flexural strength and impact resistance , also they were reduces the absorption and permeability of concrete , and they were little affected on the compressive strength.

Little information exists on the properties of glass fibre reinforced concrete. Five mixes of glass fibre reinforced concrete in addition to the reference were selected, using glass fibre content at (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5) % by volume fraction.

Also a super plasticizer type moment (bo) was used to give a slump of about (25 ± 5 mm).

The tests used to study the material characteristics were compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, initial surface absorption, permeability, and shrinkage. The research also covered a study of properties of precast concrete slabs in four different shapes with (0.5 and 2.5) % glass fibre content by volume fraction, the selection of 0.5 % fibre content to give the optimum mechanical properties and the dynamic modulus of elasticity, while the 2.5 %fibre content to give the optimum durability characteristics and impact resistance in addition to the glass fibre slabs a reference slabs were cast and tested.

The thickness of all the slabs was 5 cm but their dimensions were square of 50 cm slabs for impact strength, square of 40 cm ; 40 x 20 cm rectangular ; and hexagonal of 15 cm length for both modulus of rupture (transverse loading) and absorption. These tests showed that the concrete mixed with 0.5 % fibre content gave a while for impact strength and absorption the concrete mixed with 2.5 % fibre content was much better than the concrete mixed with 0.5 % fibre content.

Generally it is concluded that the glass fibre reinforced concrete slabs offers a better properties than the traditional concrete slabs.
