English Abstract

This study is an attempt to evaluate the suitability of the water supply plants of the city of Baghdad, these plants are (Al Karkh, 7 Nissan.

AI Karama, Al Wethba, Al Qadisiya, A1 Dora and Al Rasheed), and the performance of the Rustamiyah wastewater treatment plant (third extension).

The assessment of the suitability of existing plants is based upon recommendations set forth by the WHO and some American water authorities.

Water quality data, spanning over two years (1997 and 1998) were used.

The data covered the physical, chemical and bacteriological qualities of the water of the river Tigris at seven water supply intakes.

These are (piI, temperature, turbidity, total dissolved solids, suspended solids, total hardness, chloride, total coliforms, fecal coliform).

In addition, a hydraulic assessment of the location of the sites of the intakes was performed : according to the hydraulic parameters, such as location of water plant relative to river (upstream or downstream), type of section (straight reach or bend reach), location of bank (west side of river or east side of river), type of intake (good or poor).

Data on effluent qualities of the Rustamiyah wastewater in the river Diayla covering two years (1997 and 1998) were used in evaluating the performance of this plant and compared with standard 25 regulation, year 1967, Furthermore, the site location of this plant was assessed from an environmental and engineering point of view.

It was found that the Karkh water supply plant ranked first among all seven plants while Al-Rasheed water supply, which is down river, ranked last.

Other findings are reported here in concerning the water supplies from the river Tigris.
