English Abstract

Laser scanners are considered as the most accurate non-contact measuring tools.

One of the used techniques to obtain 3D information from scene is the triangulation based laser scanner.

The problem of estimating object position using non-contact laser scanner is addressed in this thesis, The laser scanner uses a camera as its sensor.

Camera calibration is the necessary step in laser scanner context in order to extract metric information from 2D images.

The accuracy of the calibration process is based on finding the feature locations in the planner calibration object.

Traditional calibration methods search inside a user defined window for a comer location.

A modified calibration method based on finding the feature locations of the calibration object accurately was proposed.

This is based on automatic determination of the window size with extraction of the corner location using the subspace analysis.

The laser energy distribution of the spot follows a Gaussian pattern.

The methods used for obtaining the pixel that best quantify the peak were called laser spot peak detection algorithm which play a very important role for improving quality of laser scanning.

A new method for the laser spot position estimation is developed and implemented.

This method is based on the proposed two ways principal component analysis to fest and accurate estimate of the location of laser spot to sub pixel resolution.

This method achieved impressive improved result than maximum value method especially at high noise variance, the approximate improvement was about ten times.

A iaser scanner simulator is proposed and implemented using MATLAB software to test the various algorithms.

The simulator software is presented in the appendix.

Also a hardware implementation of triangulation laser scanner is presented.

This is done by using old laser printer mechanism.
