English Abstract
Digital multimedia watermarking technology has been suggested in the last decade to embed copyright information in digital objects such images, audio and video.
However, the increasing use of databases in many real-life applications has recently created an ever increasing need for watermarking databases.
As a result, watermarking relational databases is now merging as a research area that deals with the legal issue of copyright protection of database systems.
In this thesis, we propose three efficient database watermarking algorithms based on inserting binary image watermarks in non-numeric mutli-word attributes of selected database tuples.
The first algorithm inserts watermark bits in the mostly un-noticed time attributes of selected tuples.
The second and third algorithms work on English and Arabic characters, respectively.
The second algorithm inserts watermark bits by making use of the space that exist between English characters.
The third algorithm makes use of the expandability of most Arabic characters to insert watermark bits.
The three algorithms were evaluated against four database attacks : subset deletion, subset addition, subset alteration and subset selection.
Our results shows that the three algorithms are robust as they resist attempts to remove or degrade the embedded watermark, and they are blind as they does not require the original database in order to extract the embedded watermark.
