English Abstract

This work aims to develop and evaluate a computerized numerical control (CNC) motion system for a thermal cutting machine.

A PC-based numerical control unit was constructed and other system software and hardware requirements e.g.

position measurement system and data I / O interface units were proposed.

The approach was set to replace as much as possible the specialized CNC hardware components by specially developed software that could achieve their function equivalently, thus leading to simplify the hardware construction of such machines.

Relative theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to cover the topics of thermal cutting process (both ox fuel and plasma arc cutting), CNC systems, and computer aided design- computer aided manufacture (CAD / CAM) integration.

A set of automatic data processing algorithms was proposed and developed to accommodate the requirements of this study.

Algorithms for path generation and two axes interpolation were applied and assessed in addition to a library of predefined common shapes were prepared to case path generation.

Algorithms for motion path control using : he two control bop schemes, open loop and closed loop control were accomplished and tested.

Menu and Database to provide the user with standard thermal cutting parameters commonly used in thermal cutting process were proposed and tested.

Other processing algorithms were proposed and implemented to achieve complete system requirements.

A proposal for oscillating path generation proceeding was set to cut cast iron material with ordinary flame cutting equipment.

An approach to establish software counter controller was developed to "replace the commonly used hardware counter.

Implementation of the proposed system has been successfully applied and contour shapes were cut.

A discussion is presented to demonstrate the results of tests and system evaluation.

Results assured that the proposed system could establish an adequate base of CNC machines construction lord automated thermal cutting processes which meets the industrial implementation requirements.
