English Abstract

The subject of this thesis involved the design and simulation of broadband microwave linear power amplifiers that are used in the final stages of solid stare transmitting systems.

A complete design procedure has been devised for synthesizing and analyzing class-A broadband RF amplifiers based on scattering parameters (S-parameters), after characterization of the RF power device (GaAs IMESFET), the computer aided design (CAD) program Touchstone specially developed for microwave circuit applications, is used to optimize the matching networks of the amplifier circuit iteratively untie meeting the ; desired specifications.

Prior to computer optimization, a graphical amplifier design technique was developed to be an initial guess.

The microwave power dividing / combining technique has been utilized to achieve the required high transmitter power which is usually beyond the capability of a single solid state device.

The proposed design procedure was then employed in the synthesis of two realistic power amplifiers operating in the C-band and X-band frequency ranges.

An output power of 4,0W with 20dB power gain in the C-band region and an output RF power of 8.0W with more than 26dB in the X-band frequency region have been obtained.

A generalized and easy to follow design technique has thus been verified.
