English Abstract

The quality of reclaimed wastewater and sewage sludge produced from the major industrial estates King Abdullah II Industrial Estate (KAIE), AL-Hassan Industrial Estate (HAIE) and AL-Hussein Bin Abdullah II Industrial Estate (HUIE) in Jordan was evaluated in term of physiochemical characteristics, nutrient, major ionic composition and heavy metals content.

Sampling campaign was done within five months by collecting samples of wastewater (influent, effluent) and sewage sludge from sampling sites.

The study showed that the levels of heavy metals, anions and cations for effluent treated water were almost higher for KAIE than those found for HAIE and HUIE.

However, they were considered within the Jordanian standard (JISM, 202 / 2004) for irrigation purposes, except that for CI" level in wastewater effluent of all sampling sites and the Na+ concentration at KAIE and HUIE which was higher than Jordanian standard which might be due to food industries that include factories of table salt, luncheon meat and potato chips that might be discharge wastewater rich with salts to the sewer system, in addition to the wash out of the softening process which might be discharge to the sewer system which contain a high concentration of salts .

Finally, the results indicated that the heavy metal content of sewage sludge were higher than those for effluent wastewater due to the binding capacity of organic matter.

While, their concentrations comply with Jordanian standard, JS 1145 : 2006 for sewage sludge agricultural use.
