English Abstract
To avoid banking crises, those responsible for regulating banks have always sought to determine the means (rules and regulations) that promote greater prudence levels in the behavior of banks.
Market discipline, on the other hand, relies on private sector agents (equity holders and deposit holders) in disciplining banks.
For example, as banks undertake greater risk levels, depositors, for example, may “penalize” (discipline) riskier banks by requiring higher interest rates and / or by withdrawing their deposits.
The objective of this dissertation is to provide answers to the following questions: (1) Do depositors discipline Jordanian banks? (2) During the period 1994-2008, has there been any change (improvement) in market discipline in the Jordanian banking system? Based on the time period 1994 – 2008, panel data analysis, and a total of 12 listed Jordanian banks, the results indicate the absence of a link between bank fundamentals and the supply of deposits.
In other words, based on the presented evidence, we can argue that in Jordan, depositors, on average, have not been disciplining banks.
