English Abstract

Economic growth in the Arab countries should remain a worrying factor to policymakers because of the problems posed by the already existing high unemployment rates and the relatively strong growth in the country’s labor force.

To explain the growth performance of countries at the cross-sectional (cross-country) level or at the country (time series) level, the literature contains numerous papers which examine the role of, for example, foreign direct investment (FDI) and financial development.

This dissertation examines the impact of financial development on economic growth in a total of 16 Arab countries during the period 1996-2008.

In addition, the dissertation examines whether or not financial development enhances the developmental role of FDI.

Based on the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR), and panel data analysis (random effects model), the results indicate that while FDI promotes economic growth in the Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA), financial development does not impact economic growth.

Similarly, financial development does not promote the positive role of FDI.

Finally, based on the empirical results, the inflation rate and openness to international trade positively affect real economic growth.
