Thyroid function, autoimmune thyroiditis and celiac in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients

Some of the rheumatologic disease was such as systemic lupus erythematosis SLE and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to be associated with autoimmune diseases.

Yet the association of Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and autoimmune diseases had not been studied as extensively as SLE and RA.

In this study thyroid function, thyroglobulin and antigliadine antibodies have been studied.

The objective behind this is to study the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis and celiac disease among children with JRA.

76 patients underwent thyroid function tests (TSH, T4and T3), antithyroglobuline (TG) and antigliadine.

Seven patients showed subclinical hypothyroidism, 9 patients showed autoimmune thyroiditis.

Celiac disease was demonstrated in 5 patients.

Conclusion : JRA have an increased prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis, subclinical hypothyroidism and celiac disease.
