English Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of using expository advance organizers on the first secondary students' achievement in both academic streams (scientific and literary) in reading comprehension of English texts in Al-Mazar School District through answering the following questions : 1- Are there any significant differences (a < 0.05) in the achievement of first secondary students in reading comprehension of English texts that can be attributed to the effect of using expository advance organizers? 2- Is there any significant difference (a < 0.05) in the achievement of first secondary students in reading comprehension of English texts that can be attributed to the interaction between the technique of using expository advance organizers and the student's academic streams? The sample of the study consisted of (92) students from first secondary class with its two academic streams in Al-Mazar Secondary School for Girls.

Two sections, one is from the scientific stream, the other from the literary stream, were assigned randomly to make up the experimental group, while the control group consisted of the other two literary and scientific sections. To accomplish the purpose of the study, a 60-item reading comprehension test, which was assessed for validity and reliability, was designed as a post test.

Based on a standardized test, students' scores in reading comprehension in the first semester of the academic year 2003-2004 was used to measure the equivalence of the two groups in their levels of reading comprehension. The collected data was analyzed by using analysis of Variance (ANOVA).

The findings of the study were as follows : 1- There were statistically significant differences (a < 0.05) on the students' achievement in reading comprehension of English texts that can be attributed to the effect of the use of expository-advance organizers. 2- There was no statistically significant interaction between methods of teaching and the student's academic stream on the achievement of first secondary students in reading comprehension of English texts (a < 0.05) Based on these finding, it is recommended that teachers, curriculum designers and educators should use the advance organizers as methods of teaching to improve reading the comprehension skill.
