English Abstract

Optical fiber amplifiers (OFAs) are very promising devices through their attractive properties.

Many efforts are paid to this technology in order to reach the highest possibilities of making these devices exist in telecommunication system reality.

The present work describes some physical aspects of active fiber amplifiers and a numerical model for the analysis of active optical fibers that can be applied to investigate the properties of these amplifiers.

Changing the doping material is analyzed with two types of rare-earth ions (Erbium and Thulium) and its effect on the amplifier performance is studied.

Starting from the equations that describes the evolution of the pump and signal beams along the active fiber length as very useful function to analyze the amplifier performance.

This thesis studies the normalized intensities Ipr and Isr of the pump at frequency and of the signal at frequency respectively, and gain of these amplifier vary with the longitudinal fiber coordinate z.

Then the effect of changing the signal wavelength, input signal power, pump wavelength, and launched pump power on the device performance is also investigated.

ASE phenomenon occurs with the amplification process along the doped fiber, and its effect on the amplifier performance is studied, therefore it may be more pronounced to analyze it with respect to the amplifier length.

The results of this thesis are the normalized pump intensity will decrease with length due to absorption ; also it is increased linearly with the launched pump power value.

The normalized signal beams along the fiber amplifier increases with the length due to the increase in population inversion factor and the stimulated emission process will release more energy trapped by the ions with increasing length.

Also maximum gain values are reached at the optimum lengths due to the full absorption of the pumping energy in which the multiplication factor or the stimulated emission rate has reached its maximum value.

The gain values increases with launched pump power due to increase in pump absorption, also it is increases as the length is increase, and when the length value is near optimum the gain has slow dynamics with the signal wavelength in which saturation conditions are reached.

It is found that at 0.98um pumping is more efficient for EDFA than for TDFA, and at 1.48um pumping is more efficient for TDFA than for EDFA, and EDFA is less effective to pump wavelength variation than TDFA.

The gain spectrum for the EDFA and the TDFA follow the fluorescence curve with signal wavelength of the two doped rare-earth ions in silica fibers (EDFA, TDFA).

The OF as are rapidly became realistic devices, and as new technological scheme, it seemed that no future fiber optic system could ever be made without them.
