English Abstract

The present work investigates and measures the amount of radioactivity in basalt igneous rocks samples.

Eight samples were collected from three different locations: Bardbizin Mountain, Kanishilana and Rubarok area around the Sidakan district in the northeastern of Kurdistan region, Iraq.

The studied samples measured by using gamma-ray spectrometry, planar HPGe detector with an active area of 100 mm2, with an energy resolution of 0.520 keV at the 122 keV 57Co line and NaI(Tl) Scintillation detector 2×2 inch, with an energy resolution of 11.3 % at the 662 keV 137Cs line. Two radioactive serieses were investigated U-238, and Th-232.

For the U-238 series the following radionuclides were detected: Th-234, Pa-234, Ra-226, Pb-214, Bi-214, Pb-210 and Tl-210, and for the Th-232 series the following radionuclides were detected: Ac-228, Th-228, Pb-212 and Bi-212.

In addition, two non-series radioactive nuclides Cs-137 and K-40 were detected. Activity concentrations of each of 238U (226Ra), 232Th (228Ac), 137Cs, and 40K radionuclides were measured; the activity concentration of 238U (226Ra) was ranged from (0.51 ± 0.07 to 9.32 ± 0.32) Bq.kg-1 with an average value of 5.65±0.22 Bq.kg-1, 232Th(228Ac) was ranged from (6.52 ± 1.03 to 37 ± 2.45) Bq.kg-1 with an average value of 21.4 ± 1.78 Bq.kg-1, 137Cs was ranged from (0.85±0.08 to 3.82 ± 0.18) Bq.kg-1 with an average value of 2.05 ± 0.12 Bq.kg-1, and 40K was ranged from (67±4.84 to 358.46 ± 11.18) Bq.kg-1 with an average value of 203.34 ± 8.12 Bq.

kg-1.

Along the study area the average value of radium equivalent activities Raeq have been calculated to be 44.8 Bq.

kg-1, this value is below the internationally accepted value of 370 Bq.

kg-1, the average value of absorbed dose rate D was 24.81nGy.h-1, this value is lower than the estimated average global terrestrial radiation of 55 nGy.

h-1.

Indoor and outdoor annual effective dose rate (and) were computed to have average values of (0.11 and 0.03) mSv.yiedEoedE-1, which are lower than the worldwide average value.

The average value of external and internal hazard indices (and) were calculated to be (0.138 and 0.154) which are lower than unity.

The average values of representative level index IexHinHγr was 0.386, this value is also below the internationally accepted value of (1).
