This paper presents the results of 222Rn measurements in soil-gas in 206 sampling sites ranging in depth from 10-55 cm dug inside dwellings in four provincial capitals of Kassala State.
The measurement was performed employing time-integrated passive nuclear track detectors containing CR-39.
Regardless of the sampling location the data has revealed depth dependence of 222Rn concentration in soil-gas and that the rate of change is fast at upper 20 cm and below the depth of 40 cm.
The range of the mean ± std.
values obtained were : 1.57 ± 0.43 to 3.83±0.06 KBqm-3 (Kassala town), 2.34 ± 0.37 to 3.93±0.49 KBqm-3 (Aroma town), 1.19 ± 0.26 to 3.9 ± 0.5 KBqm-3 (Halfa aljadida) and 1.37 ± 0.28 to 3.97 ± 0.79 KBqm-3 (Khashm algirba).
Depth-wise comparison of the data shown that soil-gas radon concentration is higher in Aroma relative to others at the same depth.
