English Abstract

Duhok City, similar to all other cities of Kurdistan Region, had witnessed a rapid growth and development in recent years covering all aspects of life, including the improvement of citizen’s life conditions and economy, which had led to increase in the imported of new vehicles from abroad, this lead to increase in the traffic volume on the streets which are insufficient for this change and resulted in congestion.

This increase requires the expansion of some streets and constructing new ones, and this needs long time periods and extra cost and new measures to be followed for traffic characteristics and study .

Therefore, in this study, the delay as an important measure of effectiveness at traffic signals was measured and predicted (for saturated and under saturated conditions) to help in solving some underestimation which problem by using the transportation system management techniques.

Five signalized intersections on Barzani Street which is the main and the most important arterial street in Duhok City was chosen.

Traffic delay had been measured in these intersections directly from field, then delay was calculated using the equations that fit all times of day (Time-dependent Equations) which are recommended by three different official manuals, Highway Capacity Manual HCM2000), Canadian Capacity Guide (ITE1995) and Australian Capacity Guide ARRB1995).

Then comparisons between the results of each theoretical method and the field results were made.

Finally regression analysis technique was used to establish different relationships between the delay data obtained from the field and each of the theoretical methods to find the best model which can be applied to calculate the delay in Duhok City signalized Intersections.

This study proved that the logarithmic relationship between field results and theoretical results obtained using Canadian Capacity Guide is the best representation.

Therefore, it can be concluded that these equations can be used for calculating the delay at signalized intersections in Duhok city after some adjustments, which is recommended here.
