English Abstract

This thesis includes synthesis and characterization of La(III), Ce(III) and Gd(III) complexes Containing Schiff bases or acetamide ligands. The Schiff bases used in this work were: 2-N-(salicylidene) aminopyridine (SapH), 2-N-(salicylidene) aminopyrimidine( SapmH), 2-N-(methylsalicylidine)aminobenzimidazole(mSabiH), 2-N-(salicylidine) aminobenzenethiol(SabtiH2) and 2-N-(methylsalicylidine)aminoben zenethiol (mSabtiH2), While the acetamides were: N-(2-pyrimidyl) acetamide (aapmH), N-(2-benzoimidazol ) acetamide (bziaH), N–(2- mercaptophenyl) acetamide (aamH) and 2-acetamido benzoic acid (aabaH). Metal complexes of La (III), Ce (III) and Gd (III) with the Schiff base or acetamide ligands (L) were prepared either non-electrolytes with the general formula [ML2X3] and electrolytes with the type [ML2X2]X where X= NO3 -or Cl-.

The prepared complexes were characterized by conductivity measurements, elemental analysis, i.r and uv-vis.

Spectra. Conductivity measurements in solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or dimethylformamide(DMF). On the bases of i.r.

spectral data results it was suggested that the ligands were coordinated to the metal ions, through ONS derived from the phenolic oxygen, azomethine nitrogen, thiophenolic sulfur and nitrogen of the heterocyclic ring, also the chloride ion was either coordinated as a ligand or uncoordinated in these complexes, which confirmed by molar conductance measurements , and AgNO3 test for chloride ion. On the bases of elemental analysis, conductance and infrared spectral data, it may be concluded that the prepared complexes in this work have coordination numbers (six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven or twelve) depending on the number of coordination sites of the Schiff bases , acetamides and anions present.
