English Abstract

The overall aim of the study is to evaluate the environmental impact of land use change on the natural resources (water and soil), using remote sensing techniques in Irbid area.

The study area is located in the northern west part of the Jordan, and covers about 313 Km2.

The area is bordered in the north by Syria, where the Yarmouk River is the border of the two countries.

Accessibility to the area from Amman is through the highway that connects Amman and Irbid. The adopted methodology in this research is based on using satellite imageries to investigate the land use change in the study area between 1984 and 2005.

It was found that urbanization increased from 68 Km2 in 1984 to 127 Km2 in 2005 on the expense the agricultural lands and fertile soils.

In order to assess the groundwater vulnerability to contamination, GIS and SINTACS model were used in this research.

And it was found that 2% for area has low vulnerability to pollution and 83% of the area has a moderate vulnerability to pollution and 15% has high vulnerability to pollution.

Soil and surface water susceptibility to pollution were assessed using a USGS DEM model that shows the surface water flow direction.

This was accompanied with the potential sites of contamination.

The results of this research showed that urbanization and roads pose high risk for polluting the soil and surface water surrounding them.
