A schematic analysis of moses story with Khidr

Abstract EN

This paper aims at revealing the results of schematic analysis of Moses' story with Khidr (Peace be upon them) in Al-Cave Sura (Sura 18) in the glorious Qur'an.

The paper employs an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of the story which covers verses (henceforth V) 60-82, of the Sura within the framework of pragmatics as a perspective (Verschueren, 1999).

However, frequent recourse is also made to Cook's 1994) schematic model for literary discourse.

It is argued here that the main strategy used for interweaving this story is that of schema, i.

e., a socio-cultural system of rules, norms, values and beliefs which language users use to interpret and understand discourse.

The analysis shows that schemata are used not only as rhetorical strategies for organizing discourse form and indicating its type, but are also used as thinking strategies which stand for the belief system of language users and meanwhile contribute much to discourse coherence.
