English Abstract
Assessment of in-situ concrete, a major building material in construction, has been of considerable interest in Construction Industry, mainly for quality control as well as to find in-situ strength.
The measurement of concrete strength is generally done by normal destructive tests in Kurdistan Region.
However load tests or core tests are not always possible or practicable.
Since last decade, non-destructive testing (NDT) has been widely accepted throughout the world to assess the quality of in-situ concrete.
In Kurdistan this technique is still rarely used, and even though, but still there is no equations that can be depend on.
The work that has been done in this thesis is the pioneer to estimate strength of in situ concrete using NDT.
The most available NDT includes Rebound hammer, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity tests, Penetration tests, pullout tests etc.
This thesis describes a study carried out to investigate the effects of some factors that have significant influence on Rebound Hammer (RN) and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) results.
Therefore 216 cubes were cast and tested in laboratory for different grades of concrete, curing conditions; type of coarse aggregate used; age of testing and 120, 167 cubes were tested in Hawler and Duhok cities of Kurdistan Region as an effort to represent most of materials resources used in this Region, and then to obtain correlation equations of concrete strength with RN and UPV results Statistical regressions have been applied for the gathered data from different resources.
A number of Correlation equations between RN test and UPV test results have been developed to obtain reliable results in order to assess or estimate the strength of doubt concrete in site.
However, it has been concluded that none of these tests can be used independently to yield reliable quantitative results.
Therefore, adopting the test results a combined method has been developed to predict concrete strength with a reasonable accuracy.
This was approved in two cases studies.
They have shown that when both RN and UPV test results combined together yields to estimated concrete strength within an acceptable degree of accuracy reached 90 %.
In addition, supplementary core test results confirmed the reliability of the correlation between the different NDT techniques used.
Wetting concrete structures or elements before using NDT has been shown to give more reliable results than when tested dry.
Also, the use of more than one NDT method at a time is advantageous when the variation of properties of concrete affects the test results in opposite directions.
