English Abstract
The present study includes isolation and determination of some chemical constituents of Scorzonera papposa DC.
followed by antimicrobial investigation of some isolated fractions.
S.
papposa (Scorzonera papposa DC.) has been chosen for the present work because this plant is used as an edible plant by Kurdistan villagers, and therefore, foundation of the chemical constituents of the plant will be necessary.
In addition, this plant was phytochemicals neglected because no compounds were isolated before The present work includes two main parts, the first is concerned with the chemical studies performed on the plant, and the second includes the antimicrobial studies of some plant extracts.
In the first part, several chemical studies have been performed individually on both of the aerial parts and the root of S.
papposa Starting with determination the percentage of the moisture and total ash, followed by determination of fifty elements using ICP-AES and ICP-MS instruments, after that; using Micro-Kjeldahl method, total nitrogen % and crude protein % were determined.
Finally ; total soluble carbohydrates were estimated using anthrone Colorimetric Technique, followed by simple sugar detection using Iodine, Molisch, Benedict, Barfoed, Bial and Seliwan off tests, then examination of extracted soluble carbohydrates by TLC was performed.
Staying in the first part, some chemical studies performed only on the root of S.
papposa; lipid components were extracted using Soxhlet apparatus, followed by purification through re-dissolving it in mixture of ethanol and petroleum ether.
Then separations of the unsaponifiable matters from extracted lipid have been performed, and were preliminary detected using simple TLC technique.
Isolation of Lupeol acetate and some other expected compounds performed using preparative column chromatography, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR instruments has been used for detection of the isolated compounds.
In other hand, flavonoid compounds were extracted using modified Harborne procedure, followed by preliminary detection of them using simple TLC technique.
The second part of this work includes two types of biological activities examinations.
First, examination of nine different extracts of S.
papposa against three types of bacteria (Escherichia coli (G-ve), Bacillus sp.
(G +ve), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (G -ve)) has been performed.
The second is examination of the alcoholic and the aqueous extract of both of the aerial parts and the root of this plant against three types of fungi (Pencillium puberulum, Aspergillus flavus, and Mucor).
The study showed that some extracts have biological activities against both used bacteria and fungi.
