English Abstract

The study which is entitled “Curriculum, Syllabus and Approaches to Course Design with Reference to Sunrise” states that Sunrise is a new programme prepared by British Macmillan Publishers Company in Iraqi Kurdistan Region in the recent years in order to see how satisfactory the general appearance of the book is.

Is the book suitable with regard to it's teach ability? How much is the teaching of language skills satisfied in the book? To what extent, the teachers of “Sunrise” adhere to an appropriate methodology to carry out teaching and learning? Do the teachers succeed to address students’ existing communicative competence and proficiency? Does the syllabus articulate course goals, and does the course design, i.e “Sunrise”, provide opportunities for active learning, encoding critical thinking ; use teaching methods that create a sup portative learning environment and take into account learners’ needs and interests ; facilitate constructive interaction and collaborative learning among students and their community ; Two procedures are adopted to achieve the aims of this study ; 1.

two questionnaires (one for teachers and the other for supervisors) 2.

a test for students have been conducted.

The study includes five chapters ; The first chapter is an introduction to the study.

It consists of the problem, aims, value, limitation, hypotheses and procedures of the study.

The second chapter deals with the theoretical background of curriculum and its types, syllabus, the characteristics of syllabus, different types of language syllabus, different approaches to course design, needs analysis and objectives, selecting the shapes of the syllabus, organizing the course, materials and evaluation.

The third chapter covers historical review of the previous textbooks and the construction of Sunrise Programme.

It describes the objectives of the programme and presents a brief analysis of sunrise (1-9).

The fourth chapter which is entitled data collection and data analysis deals with the Questionnaires, the Population and Sample of the Questionnaires, the test, the sample, pilot test, test validity, test reliability, the final test, scoring scheme and statistical means.

It also tackles analysis of the results of the teachers’ and supervisors’ questionnaires and analysis of the results of the students test and discussions.

The fifth chapter comprises the conclusions, recommendations and suggestions for further studies.

The results obtained from the study reveal the following main findings : - Sunrise programme is a suitable programme to meet the needs of learning English language.

Adequate review sections and exercises are included in the textbook for helping learners to develop the communicative competence.

- The CD, which is supplied with the textbook, is of high quality production, i.e.

the sounds and speeches recorded on the CD are clear, not too soft or too loud.

Pronunciation exercises focus on stress, rhythm and intonation that makes these aspects be helpful in developing the learner's pronunciation - Sunrise is a new Programme applied in Kurdistan Region recently.

It is a well-organized and accurate programme concerning its cover, graphics, contents and topics.

It is up-to-date, i.e.

it concerns with contemporary subjects and Kurdish culture that motivate learners and make them more active.

This new series uses the communicative approach which focuses on the four main language skills individually and in an integrated way that helps students learn the language easily.

The instructors and students, preferences are included in the design.

Despite these good points of this new programme, most of the teachers and supervisors see that the objectives and the contents of these textbooks are somehow complex and do not completely satisfy the learners’ needs and interests.

Furthermore the directions and interactions are difficult.

- Teacher’s Book helps teachers to understand the rationale of the textbook.

It is provided with answers key, technical notes, wordlists, lesson summaries, grammar section and instructions about how to use the programme.

Thus, teachers see that these things are effective and useful, but they also see that more sufficient instructions are needed.

The study ends with bibliography, the appendices and the abstract of the study in Kurdish and Arabic.
