Abstract EN

The main objective of the present study is to analyz the determinants of the Syrian foreign policy towards Iran during the past three decades (1979-2009).

The researcher adopted analytical and historical approaches to examine some areas of agreement as well as controversial issues in the Syrian-Iranian relations.

The conclusions drawn can be summarized as follows.

First, the Syrian-Iranian relations have developed steadily since the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.

This is due to the changes in power balance in the region because of Egypt-Israel Camp David Peace treaty and Iragi-Syrian strained relations.

Second, the collapse of the Baathist regime in Iraq represented the beginning of the siege and attack of the Rouge states, in the United States, terms; Iran and Syria.

This led both countries to ally and enhance their ideological, security and economic relations and coordination with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Third, In spite of the solid Iranian-Syrian relations, there are some controversial issues between the two countries, concerning the Syrian-Israeli peace talks, the Iraqi Issue, the Iranian invasion of the Emirate islands, and the 1991 Damascus Declaration.

Fourth, it is noted that the American Administration, particularly under Barak Obama, is trying to undermine the Syrian-Iranian alliance by stimulating the former.

Fifth, there are several, possible scenarios for the future of the Syrian-Iranian relations.

How ever it is more likely that the American-Syrian cooperation will persist along with the Syrian-Iranian collaboration This entails .
