English Abstract

Our study was designed to evaluate the effects of aqueous extract of Artemisia herba Alba on the fertility of normal and diabetic male rats.

Fifty male rats divided into five experimental groups, control, control treated with aqueous extract, diabetic non treated, diabetic group treated with aqueous extract or metformin–treated diabetic.

Oral administrations were used 0.39mg / kg body weight of aqueous extract of Artemisia herbal Alba and 14.2 mg / kg of metformin for 4 weeks showed significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the level of blood glucose diabetic rats compared to control.

Such dosage showed a protection against body weight loss of diabetic animals.

Plasma cholesterol concentration was decreased significantly (p n< 0.05) in diabetic rats treated with the plant or metformin.

The extract at concentration of 0.39 mg / kg was effective in decreasing plasma triglyceride as compared to the control, and the response was similar to the result of metformin.

Significant reduction in testosterone concentration was observed in diabetic rats treated with the plant extract and metformin.

While no similar activity was observed on control group.

Observed significant (p< 0.05) reduction the cholesterol and triglyceridelevles in alloxan induced hyperglycemic rats.

A marked decrease in sperm mobility for all groups in comparison with control was noted.

Cauda epididymis sperm mobility for diabetic rats was27.2 % while for diabetic rats treated with plant extract and metformin it was 65 % and69.7 % respectively.

In diabetic rats treated AHE or metformin no change in heart, kidney or liver weight was noted.

On the contrary, the weight of testis, epididymis and pancreas was decreased significantly (p < 0.05).

Histological examination of diabetic rats, shrinking, islets of Langerhans and destruction of beta-cells.

Organized islets of Langerhans and increased of beta cells in size were shown after treated with extract and metformin significant well.

Further histological examination of the testes showed that the control rats have many somniferous tubules and germinal epithelium with normal spermatogenesis.

The diabetic group showed some damage in the somniferous tubules and some reduction of germ cells compared with control.

Animal treated with AHE or metformin showed considerable activation of the process of spermatogenesis.

Kidney sections showed substantial degenerative changes in kidney tissues in the diabetic rats, while those given AHE or metformin showed partial changes.
