English Abstract

The objective of this thesis, to prepare a natural surfactants to be used in pharmaceutical industry as a replacement for synthetic surfactants system.

It has ability to decrease the surface tension of water.

As we know that chitosan compounds are insoluble in water due to the existence of hydrogen bonds for the chitosan itself (intra-molecular hydrogen bonding )and hydrogen bonds between different molecular weight chitosan ( inter-molecular hydrogen bonding) between the chitosan molecules, which increases the hydrophobicity of chitosan molecules to water molecules.

But this phenomena (insolubility in water) can be overcome by preparing new derivatives of chitosan compounds (surfactants) from different low molecular weight chitosans (1300, 6000, 10000, 18000 and 30000) Daltons (Da).

which reacted with fatty acid (butyric anhydride), and the resulted compounds has a high solubility in different aqueous medium (acidic- neutral -basic), because the fatty acid assist in decreasing of hydrogen bonds and increasing the distance between chitosan molecules (leads to decrease the hydrophobicity and increase the hydrophilicity).

The new compounds of chitosan can be recognized throughout the observation.

When chitosan derivative dissolved in water in a test tube and shacked, the foam was observed.

The foam appeared like the foam of soap this is indication of surfactants formation.

Because the soap one of the known surfactant.

The new compounds (surfactants) were recognize its Physico-chemical and compared with the properties of native chitosan.

The instruments used FT- IR, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(1H- NMR), Deouy- Tensiometer for measuring the surface tension of the solution and Malvern Zetasizer to measure the particle size for both chitosan and its derivatives.
