English Abstract
The aim of this study is to measure the activity concentrations of the natural radioactivity nuclides (238U, 232Th and 40K) in surface soil samples obtained from Safawi area in Al-Mafraq city ; Jordan .
Thirty samples were collected in plastic containers, and were prepared and analyzed using gamma ray spectroscopy with a high purity germanium detector (HPGe). The mean activity concentrations of 238U , 232Th and 40K were found to be 40 ± 3 Bq kg -1, 41 ± 3 Bq kg -1 and 622 ± 65 Bq kg -1 respectively.
The mean specific activity concentration of 238U and 232Th were found to be within the range of the international reported values (40 , 40 ) Bq kg -1respectively. The mean activity concentration of 40K was found to be higher than the international reported values (370) Bq kg -1, and most of some values reported in Jordan. This was ascribed to the nature of the rocks in Safawi area.
