English Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of using computer games on the lower basic stage student's achievement in learning English at Al-Mafraq Schools.
This study is an attempt to answer the following questions : 1.
Are there any significant statistical differences on students' achievement in learning English attributed to the method of teaching (computer games vs.
the traditional method)? 2.
Are there any significant statistical differences on students' achievement attributed to the technique of teaching (individuals, pairs and groups)? The population of this study consisted of all lower basic stage students in Al-Mafraq schools during the scholastic year 2009 / 2010.
However, the sample of this study consisted of 55 male and female third grade students at Al-Abrar school. The instrument of the study was an achievement test that aimed at measuring students' performance.
The independent variables were the teaching method, technique and the computer games.
The dependent variable was the student's achievement in English. The findings of the study revealed significant differences in the mean scores between the control and the experimental groups, students' performance of experimental group was better than that of the control group. Furthermore, the findings revealed that the experimental group had significant differences in the mean scores between the individual, pairs and groups technique, in favor of the individual technique.
Based on the findings of the study, the researcher presented some recommendations to the Ministry of Education and EFL teachers.
