English Abstract

Shopping cart has recently been targeted by the popular press as a highly contaminated public surface.

Carts can be very dirty indeed.

In addition, contaminated carts have been implicated in cases of serious illness; in this study the main goal is to investigate the presence of potential pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria such as heterotrophic bacteria and coliforms in the handles and bases of shopping cart in shopping stores in Al-Mafraq city.

A total of 40 samples were collected from handles and bases of these four different shopping stores in Al-Mafraq city.

Five different shopping carts were selected randomly for sampling from within customer cart return corral to capture recent usage ones.

Two dry swab samples were taken from each shopping cart, one from the handle and another one from the base.

Qualitative analysis of bacterial isolates based on biochemical tests and 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the presence of seven coliform and three no coliform bacteria in all four tested shopping stores.

The presence high level of coliform bacteria suggests that fecal material may be involved in cart contamination.

Furthermore, some of these isolates are pathogenic or potentially pathogenic bacteria such as E.

coli spp., Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Burkholderia cepacia, Yersinia enterocolitica, Tatumeella ptyseas, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella sonnei, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus pumilus.

The results of this study confirm the need for improved sanitation of shopping cart to prevent transmission of microbial infections among shoppers, The solution to prevent spread of infectious bacterial diseases through shopping carts sharing could be done by making both cleaning and disinfection effective and easy.

We also recommended that shopping carts should be cleaned or wiped daily or when any visible dirt and / or soil appear on these shopping cart.
