National identity is developed, reviewed and reconstructed according to the political issues and the emerging need to strengthen the feeling of belonging to the nation.

This paper aims at highlighting the challenges facing the Iraqi national identity and the main targets that should be approached when creating the education policy for promoting the national identity.

The multicultural education system should be adopted.

At the same time, the balance between diversity and national unity must be maintained.

The linguistic diversity must be taken into account.

However, the Arabic language, the language of the majority should be confirmed as the national official language to fulfill the need of the several communities in this country to have a common national language to communicate.

Promoting Coexistence demands reconstruction of the curriculum, teachers' training, and organizing students' activities.

Citizenship education should aim at promoting a sense of Iraqi's national identity and preparing the citizens to pursue equal and meaningful roles in the construction of Iraq.
