Modulatory effect of vitamin b12 on selenium toxicity in albino rats

The present study was performed to evaluate the toxicity induced by sodium selenite in male albino rats, and the role played by vitamin B12 in alleviating selenium toxicity.

Feeding of sodium selenite in feed of rats for one month induced oxidative damage.

Selenite significantly decreased body weight gain.

Serum transferases and alkaline phosphatase activities were increased significantly in selenium-intoxicated rats.

Supplementation of vitamin B12 orally for 4 weeks simultaneously with selenite caused less marked biological alteration in the investigated parameters.

These results suggest that selenosis can be reduced by vitamin B12 supplementation.
