English Abstract
-During a one year survey, from October end to September 2010, a total of 661 of abomasums sheep were collected from slaughterhouse in Basrah province.
The first part of the study included the gross and microscopic examination of abomasums of sheep showed the presence of six species belonging to nematodes these are: Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta, Ostertagia trifurcate , Ostertagiinae gen.sp.
, Trichostrongylus sp.
and Parabronema skrjabini.
Basrah province regarded as the new locality for the all recorded nematodes.
and the sheep of Basrah considered as new host for Parabronema skrjabini at least.
Taxonomic features and measurement of the newly recorded parasites in Basrah province.
were given and compared with the same species which were previously recorded in the world.
The second part of study included, were examined of which 204(30.89%) was positive for one/more species of helminth parasites, the six species belonged to nematodes, being found.
Haemonchus contortus appeared to be the most important parasites(19.09%).
Other species were less prevalent (Ostertagia spp.
7.49%, Trichostrongylus sp.
1.36% and Parabronema skrjabini 4.99%.
Relatively higher prevalence of abomasal nematodes was recorded in May (49.12%) While in July was (9.86%) ,the results showed significant differences (P<0.01) among different ages, sex, and mean intensity during month of study.
The third part included, detected antibodies in serum samples collected from sheep including infected animals and non infected animals by ELISA test.
the result showed higher seropositivity was observed in females(864.61%) than males(68.61%) .according to sex and type of infection the seropositivity was not signififcant at (P > 0.05) , depending on the age of test sheep the seropositivity significantly differed ( P < 0.05) among the three groups of age.
Ovine sera the showed different ELISA readings in three age groups and two sex, the higher OD( mean ± SD) was observed in female sera .
On the other hand, the comparison of antigen revealed the higher OD( mean ± SD) values were observed in the sera of age (≥2year) grouped tested .
According to ELISA test result there is single was higher than mixed infection .
The fourth part of the study also reported the occurrence of a number of gross pathological and microscopical lesions in the abomasums of sheep due to the infection with the Haemonchus contortus.
The gross lesions included congestion, thickened mucosa with hemorrhagic foci, odema and occurrence of small nodules on the wall of the abomasums.
The microscopical lesions included accumulation of inflammatory cells such as leucocytes, eosinophils in three parts(cardiac, fundus, pyloric) of infected abomasums, loose of cellular structure, hypertrophy, hyperplasia of lamina propria and erosion of mucosa .
