English Abstract

-In this thesis, industrial secondary reformer reactor in the State Company of Fertilizers South Region has been modeled and simulated.

In order to create a reactor design model for the secondary reformer in the industrial ammonia plant, combustion and catalyst zones have been studied.

The temperature and composition of the gas in the combustion zone are predicted using the atomic molar balance and adiabatic flame temperature.

In the catalyst zone, the temperature and composition profiles along the axial distance are predicted using a one-dimensional heterogeneous catalytic reaction model.

The first objective of the thesis is to study the effect of operation conditions such as, feed compositions, feed pressure and temperature, on the mole fraction of the product components, temperature and pressure of the secondary reformer reactor.

Also, the rates of reactions, effectiveness factor and diffusion limitations have been studied.

The model covers all aspects of major chemical kinetics and heat and mass transfer phenomena in the secondary reformer in the ammonia plant at steady state conditions.

The mathematical model allows calculating the axial variations of compositions, temperature and pressure of the gases, where most of the methane is converted at half of the catalyst bed of the secondary reformer, while the hydrogen is increased along the length of the catalyst bed.

The temperatures of both gas and catalyst surface decreased with the axial distance from the top of the bed, while the reactions took place.

The results show the conversion rates of reactants have be very large in the first section of catalyst zone with length between of (0-1.4) m, while the conversion rates values have reduced gradually to the end of catalyst zone with reactor length is about of (2.8) m.

In this study, the influence of diffusivities coefficients and the effectiveness factors of reactions in the catalyst zone on the mole fraction of products components, temperature and pressure will be investigated and discussed.

The results depicted, the diffusivities coefficients of reactants are decreased a long
