English Abstract

Wireless local area networks (WLAN) started to play a major role in network environments that are used in companies, as it has a very popular home networking applications.

IEEE 802.11 standard is the most widely used technology in the wireless local area networks (WLAN).

Wireless networks provide the flexibility, mobility, low cost and increase productivity in the workplace.

Despite of these advantages there are problems with regard to security issues in the wireless LAN, certain mechanisms must be used to prevent intruders from accessing the network.

Since the data transmitted through the air in the wireless networks, which makes anyone capable access the network if they do not use the mechanism of authentication.

We must therefore use the mechanism of authentication.

Every computer connected to the network has a physical address (MAC address), and can use a method to verify that the address is in the list of legitimate addresses or not.

Because the networks provide the Internet service, loophole can be used by attackers to access the network.

Therefore, a firewall must be used to protect the wireless network from insecure websites or intruders.

Firewall programs are the techniques used in the monitoring, controling and filtering the information that passes through the Intranet and the Internet.

Firewall strengthens the security policy through policy rules that determine whether being acceptable or unacceptable.

The firewall program is a basic requirement for any person who uses a network connected to the Internet, in order to prevent the penetration and other security threats. In this work some methods and techniques have been investigated to determine the appropriate security for the specific wireless network applications.

The aim of the project is the design of applications (Server Application and Client Applications) to protect the wireless network.

These applications provide mechanisms for the protection of the network.

The MD5 Hash and SHA-1 Hash algorithms have been implemented to verify the legitimacy of the user in order to access the network.

For the verification if the user is legitimate or not, a mechanism has been used to examine the physical address to ensure its legitimacy, as was the creation of a database in the server application which contains information on each legitimate user connected to the network, including the physical address (MAC address).

Also a mechanism was used for the management of IP addresses using DHCP or Static IP address.

Because of the risks that could have been caused by Internet a firewall was used to protect the network from the dangers of the Internet, where that the firewall type used in the research is the packet filtering which is based on rules which are placed on the IP addresses or ports, it also monitors the applications to prevent any unwanted application.

Each of these mechanisms can provide the appropriate degree of security for the wireless network.
