English Abstract

-Recent development in manufacturing processes and major role of computer technologies in fields of CAD / CAM makes it important to get part program rapidly to be applied to the new manufacturing machines.

This thesis focuses on design and building of a new system for scanning 3D objects to transfer them to part program or part model.

The system consists of a simple rig to carry the part and consist of a wooden table, power supply, DC motor, pulley, shaft, disc, lab jack, transistor and encoder.

The object to be scanned is placed on a turntable to be viewed at 360 degree.

A laser line is directed toward the object and a digital camera is kept facing the lighted side of the object.

The object stays at each angle-increment for a predefined period of time to allow the camera to get profile image.

Angle increment can be set at any value depending on how complex is the 3D object and depending on the desired scanning accuracy.

After completing 360̊ of scanning object, object scanned images are saved and processed then to extract the object profile.

The 3D scanning system used to scan objects like cylinder, vase, socket…etc, and then getting its dimensions and drawing it in 3D space.

In some objects, proper scanning angle increment is used and good accurate results are obtained.

For high scanning accuracy, the place contains the 3D scanning system should be dark and small scanning angle increment must used.

The results obtained were compared with the real dimension of the objects and good matches were obtained.
