English Abstract

A simple, accurate and precise spectrophotometric method is presented for the determination of ammonia based on the formation of a deep red color product with ninhydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide with an absorption maximum at 508 nm.

The reaction proceeds quantitatively at pH 10.0 at room temperature in 20 min.

The calibration curve is linear over the range of 2 x l04 - 1.4 x l0-3 mol \ L and is described by the regression equation A = 1069 C+ 0.109 with a regression coefficient (R2) of 0.994 (n = 7).

The calculated molar absorptivity and Sandell sensitivity values are 1.069xl03 L / mol / cm and 62.88 mol /cm2, respectively.

The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) are calculated to be 1.2xl0"5 and 3.6 x l0 -5 mol / L, respectively.

The intra-day accuracy expressed as relative error was less than 0.5 % with precision (RSD) ranging from 0.49 to 1.55 %.

The inter-day accuracy ranged (RSD) from 0.49 to 1.9 % with a relative error was less than 1.5 %.

The method was successfully applied for determination of the ammonia in industrial wastewater.

Accuracy was also checked by placebo blank and synthetic mixture determined besides a recovery study via standard addition procedure.

The variables affecting the reactions were carefully investigated and the conditions were optimized.

The stoichiometry of the reactions were determined molar combining ratio of 1 : 2 between ammonia and ninhydrin, and the reactions pathways were postulated.

The initial rate and fixed time methods were utilized for constructing the calibration graphs for the determination of ammonia concentration.
