English Abstract

This thesis was studied the removal of ammonium ion from aqueous solutions whether it is synthetic or real samples by Petra clay minerals compared with Dowe x resin.

The percent of removal of ammonium ion by clay minerals at different variables (initial concentrations, calcinations, temperature, particle size, pH values, contact time, and anions and cations effects) was investigated.

The effect of concentration of synthetic samples were in range (35-11 %) (10-90 ppm) the percent of removal decreased by increasing concentrations.

The pH values studied from (4-10) the percent of removal increased by increasing the pH values of (28.1-33.5 %) then decreased from (33.5-8.9 %) because the ammonium convert to the non-ionized form.

Also the studied of the particle size from (38-500 ujm) the percent of removal was increased by increasing particle size (37.5-44.9 %).

The effect of temperature was studied in the range of (15-65 °C).

From (15-30 °C) the percent of removal was increased which indicate s the process is an endothermic one, but from (30-65 °C) it was noticed that the percent of removal was decreased which indicates that it is an exothermic process.

The effect of time shows that at first 15min the percent was very high, and then go slowly until reach to equilibrium.

Effect of calcinations studied from (100-900C0) the result show that the percent of removal increased from (100-500°c) then decrease from (500-900 C°).The effect of anion (CI.PO.CCV2) and cation effect(Ca+2, Mg+2, K+) was investigated ,and it was found that the removal capacity changed as cation changed ,but there is no significant effect in anions.

The Dowe x resin has the same behavior effect but in highest percentage, also temperature effect shows that the removal increases with increase temperature which indicates it is endothermic process.

Kinetic studies were investigated by using pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order rates and diffusion models, the R2 values showed that the pseudo-second-order equation was the most appropriate model for the description of ammonium transport, Both particle diffusion (Dp) and film diffusion (Df) coefficients were found in the range of for different variables like (temperature, particle size, initial concentrations, pH values).

These results were obtained for synthetic wastewater, but for kinetic studies of wastewater ( at three stages) from Al al-Bayte university station the effect of temperature was only factor, for both synthetic and wastewater samples, the results indicated that the rate determine step is particle diffusion (Dp).The activation energy was found calculated to be synthetic (22.6kJ / mol) and for the first two stages of wastewater the activation energies were 3873 and 95.36 kJ / mol respectively which means that the process is a chemi-sorption process.

Finally the LOD for this determination was2.00 > 103 ppm and the LOQ was 6.70x10"3 ppm .due to their low cost, high uptake capacity and selectivity, the Jordanian clay minerals (Petra clay) has the potential to be utilities for cost effective removal of ammonium from wastewater.
