Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)‎ application in department of surgery in Hadhramout University college of medicine (HUCOM)‎

Background : assessment of clinical performance is one of the key issues in the domain of student assessment.

Nowadays, objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is widely used as a method of clinical assessment.

Objective : to explore the opinion of fourth year students towards OSCE in surgery Method : cross-sectional study was designed to collect data from fourth year students through well structured questionnaire.

All students of the fourth year were included in this study.

Results : out of 62 students, 56 responded to the questionnaire (90.3%).

High percentage of students preferred to be assessed by OSCE (85.7%) and more than 60% of students were satisfied with the wide sample of competences in the different stations.

Time allocated for each station (5 minutes) was accepted by 76.8% and the place of OSCE in the hospital was considered suitable by 55.4%.

Feedback after OSCE is appreciated by 89.2% and rest station in OSCE is appreciated by students too (92.9%).

Conclusion :OSCE is objective, valid and reliable practical method of assessment of clinical performance
