English Abstract

365 samples of drinking water were collected from different areas in the city of Mafraq Al-Hussein and Al-zohor, Nawara and al-dobat neighborhood , the city center and suburb of King Abdullah) as well as from the main source which supplies the city with water (Sumayya station).

An intensive sampling was carried out during the summer of 2010 and extensively, in order to determine the impact of reservoirs among citizens and distribution pipelines and pumping source on the quality of drinking water.

Samples were collected from each site according to a weekly program of pumping water.

The source of water is wells located at Sumayya area which are pumped to one collection reservoir where the collected water is pumped to four districts within Mafraq city. The collected water samples were analyzed the complete chemical analysis (HCO3 ~, CI, NO3, SO42, Ca+2, Mg+2, Na+ and K+) in addition to its content of four heavy metals (Zn, Mn, Pb and Ni).

The results showed that all analyzed samples were within the recommended levels of Jordanian standard and WHO guidelines. The concentrations of various ions in water collected from storage tanks were very similar to the source and similar to each other indicating that storing water did not play a major role in deterioration of the water quality which was attributed to short residence time of water in the tanks and the high awareness of the consumers to keep their storage tanks clean.

The origin of ions in water was from dissolution of aquifers as it reflected the lithology of the aquifers.

The Na to CI ratio was clustering around 1 indicating halite dissolution and the ratio of Ca & Mg to HCO3" and S04" also clustered around 1 indicating dissolution of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) in addition to Gypsum. The heavy metal concentrations in water samples were very low which was attributed to its low concentration at source in addition to that the slight alkalinity of the water enhancing precipitation of heavy metals from water to the sediments in the storage tanks.
