English Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of using website games for learning vocabulary on students' communication skills.

It also solicited to determine if there is any effect of website games type on students' communication skills development.

The study also examined the effect of the website games on the students' retention of the words they have learned. To achieve its objectives, the study aimed to answer the following three research questions; firstly, do website games have any effect on students' communication skills? Secondly, does the website game type affect students' communication skills? Thirdly, do website games have any effect on the students' retention of the words they have learned? Forty one 5 th grade female students in the second semester of the scholastic year 2010 / 2011 at Rawdet Al Ameera Basma Primary School for Girls were selected as the study sample.

They were divided into two groups, the experimental group (20 students) and the control group (21 students).

The experimental group was taught using the computer-based method.

The control group was taught using the traditional method.

The same teacher taught both groups and they studied the same material.

Both groups were set to a pre-test, post-test and delayed test.

A five-question achievement test related to reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing skill was designed by the researcher, and speaking skill to measure students' achievement before and after the study.

A delayed test was administrated four weeks after the achievement post-test.

To check the test validity, the test was evaluated by three TEFL professor, two English language supervisors, and four language teachers who teach Action Pack 5, and it was modified according to their comments, like changing the paragraph in the first question.

To determine the reliability of the test, the researcher used the test-retest technique ; the reliability coefficient of the test was 0.87, which is statistically acceptable.

To find the differences that may arise because of the treatment conditions in the study, means, standard deviations, one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), T-test and Scheffe test were used.

They were used to test hypotheses about differences between two or more means.

The findings of the study revealed that the experimental group showed more improvement on the achievement test in learning vocabulary.

The findings also showed that the most effective game in developing the students' communication skills was the Word Search Game.

Another finding indicated higher retention level in the experimental group.

Finally, a number of recommendations directed to the ministry of education, teachers and researchers were presented.
