English Abstract

Two hundred hot water samples were collected randomly from two hundred private houses of different residential areas in Aqaba city in southern part of Jordan, these samples were tested for the occurrence of Legionella. The results showed that plumbing systems of 17 houses were colonized by Legionella with a percentage of 8.5 %, Maximum count of Legionella was 1×104 CFU / 100ml, 15 isolates were confirmed as Legionella pneumophila with a percentage of 88.2 % of the total positive samples, 10 of them were serogroups 2-14 and 5 isolates were serogroups 1, the other two isolates were Legionella species other than pneumophila. 16 positive samples out of 17 were collected from hot water tanks of a set temperature of ≤ 60°C, this demonstrate that temperature of water tanks is the most important factor in occurrence and survival of Legionella, one positive sample were obtained from water tanks of maximum temperature set point at 80°C.
