Abstract EN

The current study aimed at investigating the upper basic stage students’ attitudes towards mathematics in Amman schools.

To achieve the purpose of the study, the researcher modified Tapia’s (1996) scale.

which was administered to 417 male and female students.

The findings of the study indicated that the students’ attitudes towards mathematics were positive.

Further, there were statistically significant differences in students’ attitudes due to: (i) gender in favor of male students (ii) achievement level in favor of those whose achievement is high, and (iii) grade level in favor of the ninth grade.

The findings also indicated statistically significant differences in the interaction between gender and achievement level in favor of male students with low and moderate achievement, and in favor of female students with high achievement.

However, no statistically significant differences were found in students’ attitudes towards mathematics due to the interactions of other variables at (α=0.05).

In the light of these findings, it was recommended that more attention should be paid to the development of positive attitudes amongst female students with low and moderate achievement, and amongst male students with high achievement.

It was also recommended that students’ self-confidence in mathematics should be reinforced, and further research that compares between students’ attitudes towards mathematics in different stages.
