Abstract EN

The objectives of this paper are to investigate the nature of changes in cultural, social and economic developments which took place within the family structure in At-turah town in northern Jordan, to determine its role, function and organization through the analysis of the family pattern, family relationships and kinship.

In addition to the above analysis, indicators such as cooperation, conflict, competition and their affect on the family structure as well as the authority changing ways of treatments will also be discussed.

This study covers two main phases of the community structure.

The first extends from the beginning of the 20th century until the middle of the 1970s, were the village (town) was coherent, compatible and homogeneous in terms of the social and economic soli-darity, and self-dependency.

The second phase extends from the end of the first phase up until now.

The study offers a cultural theoretical framework through using structural-functional approach in order to get a better understanding of family structural elements and functions that have played important roles to bring about the changes that can be seen now in the social structure at this town.

It is found that there are several significant changes which have taken place and are represented in the family pattern, social relationships, pattern of cooperation, conflict, competition and authority that are being reflected on the individuals’ situation within the community.

It is concluded that family structure has been characterized by the fast and dynamic changes as a result of technological advancement and globalization.
