Use of doppler sonography and rigid ureteroscope for the management of symptomatic ureteric stones during pregnancy

Aim : To evaluate the use of Doppler sonography and rigid ureteroscope for the management of symptomatic ureteric stones during pregnancy Patients and methods : Fifteen pregnant female patients with persistent renal pain were enrolled in this study.

Conventional ultrasounds followed by Doppler scanning in both kidneys were performed for every patient. Results: The mean age of gestation at presentation was 25.5 weeks.

Stones were found in the right side in 11 patients (73.3 %), in the left side in 3 patients (20 %) while no stone was found in the remaining one patient (6.7%).

There was a significant elevation in the mean resistive index in the all 15 obstructed kidneys in relation to the contralateral normal kidneys.

Ureteroscopy was done for all patients with removal of the stones and fixation of double-J stent.

All patients improved after the procedure and completed pregnancy safely up to full term except premature labor in one patient. Conclusion : Doppler sonography and ureteroscopy are efficient in diagnosis and treatment of symptomatic ureteric stones during pregnancy.
