Abstract EN

The general remarks made, in the Qurʾān, about the status of man in the world(s) were, at a later stage, expounded by the Muslim mystics.

Their view of man’s powers is in consistence with the hierarchy they believed existed in the cosmic order.

In such a hierarchy, man acts with a special will which is preserved within God’s Will through love.

Having a special will does not make human nature an exception to the world of creation.

Yet it makes man’s situation special in the sense that he entertains the above mentioned maneuverability within the cosmic hierarchy.

The Sufi psychology, moreover, paid close attention to the position of the devil as to the human being, for he (the devil) “sits in the blood of human beings.” The points of view range over the whole spectrum, where some (al-Ḥallāj, as-Sana i, al-aettre) view the devil as the ultimate believer, refusing to bow but before Allah, others (ar-Rūmī) who accuse him of false love, and still others (ʾIqbāl) who detect different dimensions in his nature-which explains the multiplicity of opinions towards him-and see him driven, through these dimensions, by a desire to submit (to became a Muslim; a submitter) to the human being he sees fit.
