Synthesis and characterisation of some polyester derived from curcumin

Four models compound and six polymers of conjucated β-diketone derived from curcumin.

Compoundswere synthesized from the reaction of curcumin with aliphaticacid chloride (Butyryl chloride.

Octnyl chloride) and aromatic acid chloride (Benzoyl chloride, Anisoyl chloride).Six polymers have been prepared from curcuminmesogenand diacid chloride (n = 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10).

The structure of resulting compounds was identified by IR and elemental analysis.

Phase transition behaviors were observed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and polarizing hot stage microscope.

Microscopic observations and DSC measurement's confirm that aromatic models of Cur cumin gives liquid crystalline properties which are hematic phase at 170 while all the polymers of cur cumin prepared will decompose at high temperatures so no phase transition could be noticed.
