Hematological, biochemical, Immunological and histopathological changes caused by salinomycin in chicken

Hematological, biochemical, immunological and histopathologically effects of the ionophore salinomycin on chicken were investigated.

This was carried out on three equal groups of one-day-old chicken.

The first group was fed a ration containing 1 g salinomycin as salinocox / kg (recommended dose), the second group was fed a ration containing 5 g salinomycin as salinocox / kg (toxic dose), while the third one was kept as a control group and fed a ration without any treatment.

Feeding experiment lasted for 5 weeks.

Blood and tissue samples were collected after 15 days from the beginning of the experiment then vaccination against Newcastle disease was adapted to all experimental groups.

The obtained data revealed that salinomycin induced a significant decrease in the body weight, significant changes in total and differential leucocytic count represented by marked leucopenia, neutropenia with lymphocytosis.

In the same time salinomycin induced significant alterations in the serum (ALT and AST) activities and in the concentration of total lipid, creatinine, urea, calcium, and phosphorus, total protein and protein fractions as well as a significant decrease in haemaglutination inhibition antibody titer in the group treated with the toxic dose compared with those treated with the recommended dose or control group.
