Abstract EN

This study presents an information-theoretic approach to analyze the features of the quranic text in an attempt to understand the links between them and the Meccan/Madani classification of the suras.

Determining the Meccan/Madani origin of the quranicsuras has many benefits and has always been of great interest to quranic scholars.

Examples of such benefits include correct interpretation of the verses, distinguishing between nasikh and mansoukh (abrogator and abrogated), gaining insight into the various quranic approaches to calling people to Islam at various stages and in different environments, and asserting the chronology of events.

In this research work, we have prepared a data base for the quranicsuras that consists of 37 distinguishing numerical features based on the general characteristics of the Meccan and Madani Quran as derived by early quranic scholars.

We then analyzed and ranked these features using several evaluation criteria based on information theory.

We also discussed the results in view of what has been established by traditional Quranic studies.
