Varied, and unceasing security changes and developments in the security arena have engendered and paved the way to myriad forms of new crimes and modi operandi to rear their ugly heads, adding backbreaking burdens to security bodies and stressing the need for performance uplifting.

Handling of crises necessitates precise and clear strategies to be laid down.

Being one of these strategies, negotiation requires special skills and capabilities in addition to adaptability to obstacles hampering the course of negotiation.

In order to carryout a successful negotiation, one should be aware of all stages of crisis including pre - crisis, critical and end of the crisis ones.

In addition to the elements of negotiation, the study also sets forth the following: negotiation parties; negotiation situation; the subject of negotiation; objective of negotiation; the key determinants of a successful negotiation and finally sets forth examples of security crises that were solved by means of negotiation.

Such cases encompassed: hostages, and plane hijackings.

The study sums up with throwing spotlight on the key determinants that contribute to a successful negotiation, which include good preparation for the negotiation process; opting for good negotiators; preparing negotiation agenda; determining language and place of negotiation; adopting appropriate negotiation strategies and putting a plan for the course of negotiation.
